It’s the standard fall back, when in a hurry and unsure of what gift to give family and friends. Gift cards are becoming the must have gift this season.
“It makes it easier, I’ve got many family members and I let them determine what they want. It’s easier for me to do it that way, rather than to go into the store and try to find size, or color, or that kind of thing,” said Rebecca Veach, a shopper at the South Plains Mall.
For the first time this holiday season, gift card funds must remain valid for at least five years since their last load, and any expiration information must be on the card.
“It’s much more accommodating obviously, because it lets them do it for let’s say an anniversary, use that card for down the road, say in May, they can,” said Veach.
In the past, retailers have made millions from unused or expired gift cards given out every holiday season.
